Photoelectron Spectroscopy of the Trimethylenemethane Negative Ion

چکیده
The photoelectron spectrum of the trimethylenemethane (TMM) negative ion is described. The electron affinity of TMM is found from the spectrum to be 0.431 6 0.006 eV, and the energy difference between the X̃ A9 2 and b̃ A1 states of TMM is determined to be 16.1 6 0.2 kcal/mol. The energy difference between the lowest energy triplet and singlet states is estimated to be 13–16 kcal/mol. The enthalpy of formation of TMM is measured to be 70 6 3 kcal/mol, and the C–H bond enthalpy in 2-methylallyl radical is 90 6 2 kcal/mol. Previously unobserved vibrational frequencies of 425, 915, and 1310 cm are found for the triplet state of TMM, whereas a frequency of 325 cm is found for the singlet state. In addition, an overtone peak is observed for the triplet state at 1455 cm, and both states contain peaks that are assigned to bands arising from excited vibrational levels of the ion. The synergy between qualitative theory, quantitative calculations, and direct experiments in understanding, calculating, and measuring the energy differences between the lowest singlet and triplet states of organic diradicals.
This perspective describes research, carried out in the authors' labs over the past forty years, aimed at understanding, predicting, and measuring the singlet-triplet energy differences (ΔE(ST)) in diradicals. A theory for qualitatively predicting the ground states of diradicals and the use of Negative Ion Photoelectron Spectroscopy (NIPES) for measuring ΔE(ST) are described. The application of...

Negative resist behavior of neutral sodium atoms deposited on self-assembled monolayers
Negative resist behavior of neutral sodium atoms deposited on self-assembled monolayers" (2007). Other Nanotechnology Publications. Paper 24. The authors report their initial studies of the negative resist behavior of neutral sodium atoms deposited on alkanethiol molecules during neutral atom lithographic processing. Their results show that neutral sodium atoms incident upon octadecanethiol, th...

In a typical experiment, a mass-selected negative ion beam is photodetached wi...
متن کاملThe Potentiodynamic Behavior of Copper in NaCI Solutions Studied by Auger and Photoelectron Spectroscopy
The potentiodynamic behaviour of copper in brine solutions was studies. Auger and photo-electron spectroscopy were used together with electrochemical methods. It is demostrated that the passivation observed in potentiodynamic curves is due to a surface film formation on a copper electrode. It is concluded that this film must be copper (I) chloride in nature. Effect of different factors on poten...
